So what? To when language fails.

Bliss at the expense of language failing is important because of what it exposes us to. Dr. Jill Taylor expresses this in sharing her experience of having a stroke and the left hemisphere of her brain becoming silent. She emphasizes the difference in the brain hemispheres by “personalities.” In being so, the right hemisphere is the “we” personality, while the left is the “I”. The right hemisphere of her brain basically became the center of her consciousness when She had lost all speech, logic and motor skills. Surprisingly, this brought her to be thoroughly at peace. She stresses how the silence her right hemisphere brought her was the key to Nirvana. The loss of language was important because it created a euphoric sense of peace that should be experienced by all beings. If everyone had a chance to live this phenomenon of complete silence provided by only the right hemisphere, we would ultimately become one. In saying so, as human beings, we would be able to unite and altogether cooperate. To Dr. Jill Taylor, this vast and utter silence is the key to world peace, to world happiness and everything that could possibly come in between. In the poem, “Mediation at Lagunitas,” the loss of language is made up for in physical expression, in emotion and feeling. Robert Hass writes, “There are moments when the body is as numinous as words, days that are the good flesh continuing.”  It is important for language to be lost sometimes because words cannot always express what needs to be “said.” Ultimately, it can be determined that bliss can only be found in an absence of words.

  1. Bliss. The dictionary defines bliss as “a state of perfect happiness, typically so as to be oblivious of everything else”. Perfect happiness, for Jill Bolte Taylor was when she had a stroke and “felt at one with all the energy that was”. Unlike the definition, Taylor feels at one with everything instead of being oblivious. Robert Hass talks about words not being able to explain situations or experiences because words can be limited and when you find yourself in one of these situations you experience bliss. For both Taylor and Hass bliss brings them perfect happiness but for Hass it seems to be more of an out of body experience almost and for Taylor she feels that everything around her is a part of her. Bliss, to me, is almost like dreaming everything seems fake and you seem to have minimal control as to what happens but it still makes you feel euphoric.

  2. Everyone has thought processes, not everyone’s is the same. This is why brain functioning is so important and valuable in this world. If you don’t have ideas constantly flowing through your brain, you can’t accomplish anything. When Jill Bolte Taylor’s brain was shutting down she was going in and out of what she liked to call “La La Land.” She couldn’t quickly process what was going on with her brain because the constant flow was seized. So often we want to be young again, in kindergarten with no stress. Why would you want to feel empty and blank? Why would someone not want to have that constant flow of intriguing ideas? I would never in a million years choose a silent and peaceful life, life is through experiences. So now we come back to the common question again, so what? Without your brain running properly, you’re not running efficiently. So is life really living without the flow of thoughts?

  3. When language fails, communication fails. When language fails, understanding fails. When language fails, learning and thinking fails as well. Without yourself control and ability to care for yourself at any moment in your entire life, I feel like I would sadly be a waste of space. I can not imagine living without language. To be completely thought free, emotion free, worry free and completely peaceful sounds absolutely amazing, except I would not know what to do. Would I just sit at home all day while someone uses their energy and time to take care of me? That part sounds terrible; to have to completely rely on someone else to do all your work for you, leaving you without independence.
