I believe that it is very beneficial for people to wonder
about the things around us, such as the universe. If we did not constantly
question the things going on around us then there would be no advancement in
our knowledge. Brian Greene the author of “Our Universe May Be a Giant Hologram”
said it best, “I would imagine an irreverent me way down the line who refused
to fall into place.” without that questioning as a child he would have never
have kept up wondering if there was some sort of parallel universe that could
possibly exist. But, there is also the kind of questioning that could possibly be
bad for someone. The kind of questioning that I am referring to is that of if everything
we do or say is predetermined by either some sort of godlike being or by laws
of science. This in my opinion could be detrimental to someone’s sense of
purpose especially the mind of a child. When Stephen Hawking stated that “if
everything is determined by the laws of science, then free will must be an
illusion,” to me this is very depressing, because the thought that we could not
possibly make any sort of decision makes me wonder why we exist at all. In my
opinion there are good forms of questioning and then there is a form of
questioning that in many cases is detrimental to humans as a whole, for someone
to question why they exist is not a good thing.
